The coolest market in Cape Town

Cape Town is a haven for market lovers. I remember when the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill first opened up years ago, people went a little insane with excitement. (I was one of them). Since then, it seems like there’s a new artisanal market on every corner, offering the very best in organic produce, felt hipster hats and leather goods. Milnerton Market is not one of them.

Market 1

Not that I don’t love a good felt hipster hat, but sometimes I just wanna go on a damn bargain hunt. Which is when I’ll wake up at 7am on a Saturday, punch this address into my GPS and head off to the only proper fleamarket in this city. Also, I don’t like felt hipster hats. That was a lie.

Market 2

You won’t find live music or craft beer at Milnerton Market, but you will find some vintage treasures, or at the very least, some extremely affordable furniture. In fact, Kate and I are proud to say that we’ve practically decorated our entire house from a couple of epic trips. (Should we be proud of decorating with second-hand everything? We think YES.)

To give you an idea, our old-school wire garden chairs were R100 each. Spray painted bright yellow, they look like something you’d order from Superbalist. (Blog post to follow on those!). Every time we visit Milnerton Market, we walk away with some kind of awesome trinket – even if it’s just a pot plant that we picked up for 5 bucks.

Market 6

The thing is, you have to visit regularly to really score. Kate and I once went on a Saturday, got overly pumped up about everything on offer, and decided to return the next day to pick up the things we left behind. Only to find that absolutely everything had gone. The turnover of stuff is pretty high, so get there early and don’t be afraid to go back a few times to find that one-of-a-kind lamp shade…

Market 7

The Milnerton Market is open every Saturday from from 8am – 2pm, and every Sunday from 8am – 3pm. Take a bakkie, and please note that they don’t sell hipster hats of any kind.
